At first I just thought the latest spike in gas prices had caused a renewed interest in motorcycles.  But then I started noticing the riders were often young women.  Not your typical motorcycle rider.  And then I realized, these riders are not straddling the bikes!  And it hit me, the Scooter Craze had reached Southern California.

The classic scooter design features a step-through frame and a flat floorboard for the rider's feet.  Quite different compared to the typical motorcycle where you feel the thunder of the engine between you legs.  The scooter design is possible because the scooter engine and drive system, transferring power to the rear wheel, is either attached to the rear axle or under the seat. In contrast to a frame mounted motorcycle engine, this front-hinged arrangement allows the engine to swing vertically in conjunction with the motion of the rear wheel.

In addition to feeling the breeze blowing through their hair and easy parking, scooter owners also enjoy these money saving benefits over car and even motorcycle owners:

4. Scooter registration is very low and even free for smaller scooters.

In addition to saving money, scooters save time.  As mentioned above parking is easier.  They can be parked in spots designated for motorcycles which are usually close to the entrance or can be parked next to the bike rack or other out of the way place.  They also enable you to breeze through traffic when things get backed up.

Scooters Are Easy to Use.  It is basically bicycling without the pedaling.  And since the engine is providing the power, balancing is even easier than on a bike.

And let's face it, zipping around town on a scooter is fun!  That is why they are a popular rental item at many vacation spots.
