OK, I admit it. I don't really know what
real weather is like. I live in Southern California. But I do really appreciate the value of a good car cover and what it can do for you. Especially after returning home this week from my last trip to the south. Specifically northwest Louisiana.
Now there is some wacky weather. Like the time I visited in March. When I arrived on a Thursday evening, the weather was actually pretty pleasant. Things had warmed up a bit and it was still in the 60's when I arrived. The forecast was for the low 70's while I was there so all the cold weather gear was left at home.
When I woke up Friday morning it was snowing! HARD! First measurable snow in Shreveport in about 10 years. And I was there to watch my son's baseball games. Go figure.
But I digress.
The weather here in So. Cal. the week before I left on this trip was crummy by our standards. Kind of dreary and kind of raining, but not really. Enough moisture to make a mess of things but not enough to wash anything off. Of course the "anything" I am speaking of is my car, which has unfortunately been parked outside since January.
I don't cover my car when its dirty or wet. The idea of the cover rubbing over the top of my ride, pressing the dirt into the paint would keep up awake at night. And I certainly don't want to get the underside of my cover dirty, cause then it would mess up my clean car when I cover it. So for almost a week before I left my pride and joy had to tough it out in the elements. I heard it was still snowing in the Dakotas and other places, so I figured we would survive.
But I thought I caught a break, because a heat was was heading to town and I had an afternoon flight. So before heading for the airport, I gave the car a good wash and dry and put my cover on. Before I covered it I could not help but notice how nice and shiny it was and the way it glistened in the sun. The temperatures were expected to be in the 80's and 90's. And they were for the first week I was gone. But my trip was extended and the weather turned ugly again.
I have a red car and live in a sunny climate. And my car is usually parked in the garage. When it is not in the garage, it is most likely sitting in some parking lot getting cooked by the sun and sprinkled by whatever the trees care to drop on it. And then there's the birds. So I mostly cover my car for two reasons:
- It keeps it clean! I have to wash my wife's car just about every week. Mine once, sometimes twice a month. Definitely makes up for the time I spend covering and uncovering the car. Plus my almost 10 year old red car looks like new. Pretty sweet.
- Did I mention that my old standard looks new? It's a 1999 Cobra. Until Ford came out with the new body style, people would ask how I liked my new Cobra, or what do those new Cobras cost these days.
When I got home and it was still a little misty and raining in the mornings I just left the car covered in the driveway and used my wife's car. I didn't know what to expect when the cover was removed since I don't have any experience with leaving my car outside in the rain with the cover on.
I am currently using a
Coverite Silvertech car cover that is custom fit for the '94 - 04 Mustangs. The
Silvertech fabric is especially designed for sunny climates. And it really does keep your car a lot cooler then other covers. Coverite says in their brochures that Silvertech works really well in wet climates, but that sounds a little too good to be true. And besides, how much can you really believe what you read

?

Well, the weather cleared up yesterday and I had an appointment today. So off came the cover. After I rolled it up and stuff it back in it's storage bag I stepped back to admire the beast.
And to be honest I could not believe it. The car actually look as exactly like it did when I covered it. It was beautiful. All shiny and red, and I just love red!
Needless to say, I drove away with a big smile.
